Hello and welcome to Society Chats. Laura, you've, you've done like the last three, so I'm jumping in
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817do it. I love it when I don't have to, you know, do the thing,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Talk on the podcast you host.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817you know, just do the introduction to the podcast. It's a lot of stress, weirdly, even though we've been doing this for like, what, five years?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, and if you haven't been here for the past five years, you will now need to know that this is in implied society, specifically our little mini relaxed episodes where we don't do any real research. We talk about the media we are consuming and little random facts we've learned in the weeks. This is that, um, part of an episode where the podcasters asks. Well, how was your week? But instead of making you listen to that before, getting to all the fun taboo research, we just stick it to the side. So if you want it, here it is. If you don't go listen to one of our real episodes because pretty fun.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I had like to think, so what are you up to?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815What am I up to? I've lived like a human this last week
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817What? What is that like?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I've consumed so many mediums. I've consumed, I've watched a film. I went to the cinema
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh, what did you see?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I consumed a feature film. Um, it was the Woman in the Yard, which was not anything I had heard about until we were looking for a movie to see.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I never even heard of it. Is it a horror? It sounds like a horror. Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815movie
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah. Is she like just hanging out in her backyard? The woman in the yard, she's got a good bottle of soft blanc. She's just sitting out there.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Uh, I mean, it's a movie about a woman who wakes up one morning and finds that there is a woman sitting in the yard of her rural farmhouse that she and her late husband bought to fix up that she now lives at alone with her two kids, and no spoilers, but it's an al in a
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Allegory,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, it's an allegory
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817is it her? Is it her past self in the yard?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815grief.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Uh.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815it. Okay. No spoilers, but kind of spoilers. It's so, it, it gets pretty dark and it deals with, um, big old SLR slide. I don't, why am I saying, why am I speaking an allegory speak? It's about suicide and
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817We're not, we're not really on YouTube. I mean, we are on YouTube, but we're not really on YouTube. We're certainly not monetized.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815review. Anyways, it was really dark at times, but still not, it was scary to me as a not scary movie person but the whole time I was really pulled out of the story, which, you know, was pretty good. But I was pulled out of it by the fact, and this is just me being insane that the casting was. Not your typical horror movie. It was cast with a black family and
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Okay.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815actually have anything to do with race, which I
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Wait, a black family in a rural, like, like lot of land.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, they bought a farmhouse
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, that's, I would be distracted by that as well. I was like, no, I'm not saying it can't happen, but I'm also like, I wanna hear that story more than I wanna hear the other story.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815it was an
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Mm-hmm.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815casting too, because a lot of the horror stories or where people are cast, where black actors are cast, race is a factor. But it, at least not to my uneducated eyes, I didn't see it factor in at all. And which is kind of cool, right?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817no, I, yeah, you're right. I do like that.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815yeah, the
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Playing against type.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Well, and it's just that, you know, it shouldn't matter what color skin you have, but at the same time it does matter because the whole time I watched it, I was like, this is some white people shit. If, if I'm like being so honest and not just buying the fixer upper farmhouse, but like the whole feeling so sorry for herself. I'm like, I know this is gonna sound reductive on some level, but I feel like the strongest among us are black women. And so it's just like. I don't, something about how she's sliding. And I'm not saying that depression picks and chooses or is exclusionary, but I'm just like, this isn't matching up to my lived experience. And then at the very end when she is she's actually fighting, killing herself. She is using a gun, a shotgun. And I'm like, well, this is just. Reeks of white man. You know, when women do commit, it is typically not guns,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817no
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815So
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817nonviolent. There's pills or.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Well, and I also stop me if I'm wrong, internet or whoever listens to this, but I also feel like suicide, big taboo across America. I feel like it's even more of a taboo within black communities
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Correct.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815once the big twist was revealed and that we learned, she was debating or fighting, the woman was her inner desire to kill herself. Like a whole black family got up and left
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Good for them. They're like, fuck this shit.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Well, I was like saying, fuck this shit. She's a single parent to two
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, that's immediately when you thought, when you said that, I was like, dude, you got two fucking kids in the house. That ain't an option for you.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, I wanted to reach through the screen and slap her,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817her.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815but
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Get your shit together.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815the kids were the, the coldest part, like there was her little inner voice just talking to her. And that actually delivered the coldest line of the whole movie where she asked her inner suicidal ideation, manifestation, will they be okay without me? And she goes, yes. You set them free
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Ooh.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815it was just like, as a mom
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817And is that, is that where they got up and left?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I think it was right around that
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Because I would've too, I'd be like, I ain't watching this shit. If this movie ends with a woman killing her kids, peace out.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Well, well, she didn't kill the kids. She didn't, that was never her intention. Setting them free meant like setting them free from her. Right?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, but you know, that's the.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Well there, then there's the whole surprise ending. Did they didn't, did she didn't, did she, didn't she? Because the dog that my dearly disappears, shows up in the end and I'm like, oh, there, you know, you think it's a happy ending,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817But is it.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815And anyways, like I said, the whole thing, I was like, this just res in white people's shit. And sure enough, I look it up. The writer Steve Stefanki or something? Steve? No, Sam. Sam Stefanak. So, a, a white male writer who wrote this movie about his own struggle with depression
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah. Well then cast yourself in it.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Right. It, it, it did. I think they probably would've felt too much like a shining if it went that route.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Fair.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815uh, I just say. Kudos on the casting decisions, but maybe we need to, it, it, it kind of read like I don't see color, but you do have to to some extent.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817That's fair. I have not seen the movie, but from all of the things that you're saying, I'm just like nodding in agreement. Definitely see where you're coming from.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah. Well, and I'm a certified hater, so I don't like anything.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Certified hater.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815But I do have some things that I like, but I don't want it to monopolize. Laura, what's going on in your world?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Well, mostly I have finished, orange is the New Black. 10 years after it ended. I don't even know, like when? When did it end? I have no idea. The animal, which is, I looked it up. Regina Specter did that. Especially for the series, which I thought was cool. As soon as I heard that, I was like, that's Regina Specter. Like I, I didn't have to look it up immediately. I knew, and it was specifically for the series, so I just finished it. You know, overall I enjoyed it, but there were definitely some things that I didn't like. But did, did you finish the series? You, I think we were talking before you said you didn't
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815remember. That was a lifetime ago.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817truly.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815the beginning. I feel like I dropped off after that. Um, straight woman lesbian thirst trap character showed up. Ruby Rose.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh yeah, I, that was annoying. I agree. Um, she was a little bit, I think, kind of before, I think the series kind of took a dip, but I, I know who exactly who you're talking about. so I finished the last season and I have a lot of thoughts, but mostly what I wanna talk about is just. Compassion fatigue about the end is origin. The orange is the new black. So I will be totally honest, vulnerable, like about who I am and where I live, you know what I mean? Like
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815getting serious. We started with racial issues and
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817truly.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815getting tough.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817No, like I have never thought that much about the prison system because I have never been to prison, nor has anybody I know, at least not closely, right? So this has never been something that I had ever really thought about before. And so I give big props to Orange is the New Black for making. White, middle class or whoever, middle class people, you know what I mean? Think about it and
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815out of our butts and be
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815All these, this is, it's not, people don't choose to go to prison. In some circumstances.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817No, they don't choose and necessarily like, how are we treating them and like, are we really looking to rehabilitate or are we Yeah, exactly. Like I've, I've never really thought about these things. And so I give big props to the show for bringing that to the forefront and making me think a lot of thoughts. I was like, the privatization of prisons is something that I had seen in like think pieces or headlines, but I. I never thought, I never cared to look into it. And I, and I, I even, I haven't done so since watching the show, but when they were talking about in the show, immediately it like clicked and I'm like, oh, that's a bad idea. Like, it was like, you, you very like follow the threads and you're like, oh no, that, that's not good. And so it really did get a lot of thoughts going. But then in the last season of the show. They really went off the rails. And when I say off the rails, I mean they tried to bring in about a thousand different like social issues that we should care about. Not to say that we shouldn't care about them because they should, but this is where the compassion fatigue comes in. So like the entirety of the show, I'm thinking now about the prison system, racism. Sexism, addiction, police for brutality. Like those are a lot of heavy subjects, right? That weigh heavily. And then in the last season, but now we're throwing in a whole new mix of things that I need to be worried and concerned and compassionate about. Deportation abortion. Me too. Infant death, like one of the prisoners. Infant died. Female genital mutilation out of nowhere. We have somebody that came from Egypt or like somewhere in that region and was like, I don't have a clitoris. And it's like, it's not that these aren't issues, they definitely are issues, but like they're like jamming it into that last season. And I'm just like, I feel like this got really far away from where we started. Like you need to stay on message a little bit. I don't,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Y.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817is that
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Netflix show. Can't solve all the world's problems.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Exactly.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815it did a good job, like you said, of bringing attention to that specific issue. And then at this point you bring it in at the end, like is it because you're trying to raise awareness or are you trying to do a little bit of trauma tourism and just show all the ways that the world can go askew, especially with the infant loss.'cause like I think everybody knows that that happens
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815for it.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah. Yeah,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815know.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817exactly. I'm like, I feel like, yeah, you're just like layering on like the traumas. Like there was a major character death, I think like the, the second to last episode, and it's like, really? Did you really need, I, I never expected the show to end. Like, and then everybody lived happily ever after. You know what I mean? Like there was. But it just left like a bad taste in my mouth. I think that show should have probably ended in season four or season five and would've like, you know, top tier.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815A blanket statement that
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817True. So true.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815four or five. Um, but I mean, what are you gonna do? Because the book that it was based on, she served her whatever, 18 months and then she left,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, totally.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815and I mean, that doesn't make that good of TV show
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817But that's, but honestly that's the, the span of the TV show is like 18 months.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Jesus, that's a busy 18
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817It truly is. It truly is. Like, it's not seven years or however long like the series went, and it did such a good job of making you really care about these characters and think about things in a different light. And so I give it hard props to that. And then I also give hard props then to HBO. Because I know it's not an HBO show. HBO generally cap shows out at three seasons. There's a reason
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Oh yeah.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817because you keep it going for too long, you lose it, man. And, and they lost it. And so I think
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815what show
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I'll rewatch it again, but in like a couple years and maybe stop at like season four.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I have no desire to re-watch it. You were talking about it and I'm like, mm.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Some of the characters. Some of the characters are so good. Tasty. Ugh, she's my fucking favorite.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Casey.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815liking them, but again, I don't remember enough about them. And I feel like in a couple years maybe you won't remember them either,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I don't know. You'd be surprised. I can really hold onto stuff. I'm, I really latch onto my media.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815yeah, we'll see. The
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815will
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817True, true time will tell.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Ah, so I feel like we need to get on something a little bit lighter. This is heavy
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah. That's fair.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815which is, you know, not necessarily what we talk about. We actually got a little bit more opinionated on the, what we normally do, we
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Mm-hmm.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815toe the line. So we offended you in a way that makes you wanna interact with us or
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815or keep hate listening.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah. You know, shoot us an email.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815spicy right now because the other thing that I've been doing, I am now a gamer. I am
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817What? It's not Sims.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815No. Well, the Sims that, I mean, off. That's my
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I mean, it is a computer, isn't it? It's,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815affair.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817a computer game.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Oh, yeah, yeah. But I wouldn't like consider myself a gamer. So this all started when I discovered my husband and I just were watching YouTube. I now, I have a un favorite YouTube creator too,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Ooh.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815really coming into the 21st century. Uh, but we were watching his random. Ch random movie documentary, fake documentary, made by a video game person about a Jurassic alligator going from pond to pond and taking over a server, and I'm like, okay, what
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Taking over a server.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815there's these games, they are like survival games. I don't know if you've heard anything about survival
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Mm-hmm.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815husband and I used to try to play arc, but the skill gap was just way too big. Where, you know, we're two like naked people on the island trying to survive. And meanwhile, like I'm just befriending the dodos and he's actually doing everything. Um. But it's like a dinosaur survival game. So you literally, you play as a dinosaur and you just like go on an island and you try not to get eaten by the mixed packers that are out there trying to eat you.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Okay.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815and I
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Are you a her herbivore or a carnivore?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815want. Every dinosaur on the island is another person.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Ah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815And so you're playing against other people and terrifying. Like my little, my little watch that tracks my stress, I. When I'm playing. Um, but
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817It's good for you. It's that primal need, right?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815okay. Any delusion I had that I would do good in a disaster after the disaster psychology episode out the
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817You need to role play as the dinosaur that's.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I, I need to get used to conflict'cause I'm like, oh my God, I panicked. I didn't even finish this. So the, the game is called Patha Titans, the creator that I watch, he's pretty good. He like makes these documentaries, the storytelling and like narrative construction. Is really good. And he takes these dinosaurs and he like, makes you care about them even though they're, they, he probably dies like a thousand times while doing it, but he slices it together and makes it look like a nature documentary and I'm like, this is so enjoyable. He doesn't have that many videos. His name's Yellow Tones
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yellow tone.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815have that many videos. He's only been, he's been doing it for like a year or two and there's like 12 videos total. So I believe breeze through those and I'm like, okay. I'm gonna try my hand at this. And so someone who's just not game at all, I buy it on a fricking console, uh, like on the switch. And so I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. I'm just a small little dinosaur out there running and my strategy is to run fast and I pick the fastest dinosaur'cause I ain't,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817That's a,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815to
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817that's a fair strategy. I feel like.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815again. The panic sets in. Today I died very spectacularly, uh,'cause I was being attacked and I ran and I ran, ran, ran. And I ran off a cliff, fell into a creek or a river and survive. Survived all that. While I'm swimming, I'm like, oh, I'm gonna go underwater and hide and they won't be able to see me anymore.'cause I think they jumped in after me to be fair because it defies all ration. These people are just out ration. Rationale. Was it, what am I saying?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817All rush all out the window.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815It defies all reason. They just wanna kill you, so they, they're just gonna like do whatever to
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817They're on a mission. It's not like hunter predator prey relationship. It's human grudge. I'm gonna win.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Uh, yeah, I wanna torture and
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815pain on other people. Um, so then I dive underwater. Mistake. I did not know how to come back up from, from under the water,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817you drowned yourself.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I drown myself and I'm like, I could've just, you know, let this person kill me and then they could've eaten my body and got sustenance. But nope, I look like an asshole diving into
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817No, that's you. This is again, this is the human aspect that comes into play. You didn't let him get you. You didn't let him get you.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815yeah, I know. Well, I didn't mean to die, but I
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817He doesn't know that
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, my body's just down there at the bottom of a river somewhere
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817you're like, good luck fucker.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Also, why is it so hard to get out from under the water?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817it seems like up would be the obvious way to get up.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I get maybe I got turned around and was swimming down. I don't know. It looked like I was in the abyss. That's all I got. But anyways, that's my new thing. That's what I did today. I played a lot of that
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817That sounds really fun. After we had this flub about what time we were gonna record,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I, I, uh, that was all my fault. My phone did, wasn't working and so I, I wasn't that bothered because I was deep cleaning. Our master bedroom, our bedroom,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815oh, you gotta do that every once in a while.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817oh my God. I don't even know how long it's been, Rachel. There was so much dust and just. Disgusting. I pulled up all the furniture out from the wall, dusted the walls, you know what I mean? Like when it gets like that, did like the, you know, the tool for the vacuum along the baseboards and like all that shit. I'm like, there is no fucking allergens in this room. We better, we were gonna sleep so good.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Right, which I did. I pulled up our, uh, air purifier and that helped us a lot sleeping wise.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817we were talking about that, about getting an air purifier. They cost a lot of money and we're on this whole new no, no buy thing. So
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815yeah. You
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817no buy.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815for rooms, but we got like a big one'cause we have all the fucking animals.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, that's fair.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815why we did it. And I wish I had more, but
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I also, I.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815as well, just to kind of a whole house reset.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817the dying dinosaurs.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I make myself do all my chores first. So everything I
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817That's smart.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815the kids were over at my in-laws today, so
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Good for you.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815yeah. My husband was nice enough to arrange that, so I cleaned like a mad lady for a couple hours. Did you know my, the things that needed to get done, my run grocery shopping, had a good lunch, and then just like played dinosaurs for five hours.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817There you go. Living your best life. Living your best life.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815myself some Wagyu ground beef
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Ooh,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815from Aldi. I know. I'm gonna regret it in the morning'cause that was greasy, but it was a nice, nice little treat to self day.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I also made, because I was like going through the kids' socks, uh, the drawers, I was putting away laundry. And I'm like, why do I have so many fucking socks? So I took out all the kids' socks and like cold? Yeah. Cold out the socks that I don't want. Put'em in the moppet swap pile. And then I was like, I still have too many fucking socks, but like, I just need them to like scooch. I asked Austin, I was like, do you have any of the more of those drawer dividers, like the plastic, you know, the thingies? He's like, no, I don't have any more. He said, I can order some. I'm like, no buy. We're on this no buy thing, son. Like, I don't need every, like, every tiny inconvenience that you have does not require an Amazon purchase, which is very much so his mindset.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I was like, no. And so I made my own drawer dividers with uh. Diaper box. Very good. Cardboard
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817and some duct tape.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815do you wanna know what's holding my kids' clothes? Separated boxes, cardboard and painter's tape.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Exactly. And that's as, as God intended, Rachel?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I was like, ah, you don't need to buy it.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817No.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815use the box. Your other purchase came in.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, you don't need to buy shit. Like that's, that's, I'm trying to get him in this mentality. Austin's very much so a gadget guy. He likes
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Oh
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817buy things for every little need. And, uh, that's not really my style, but I've, so we're finally on the same page of like, no, we don't need to do this anymore.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817And he was like giving me all these like, well, you should probably do it like about two separate pieces of cardboard and then merge them together so they can slide. And I was like, nah son, I'm just gonna get a piece of cardboard and then wrap it in some duct tape. It's fine.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815yeah.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817And uh, it worked great.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, I just put the cardboard in and then tape the paper or use the paper to like
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815and
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817yeah,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815mostly keep it in place.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817exactly. Exactly.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Doesn't need to be perfect.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I feel like his dad is, his dad was an engineer, and I feel like that like seeped in hard, you know what I mean? Like optimization and like, like never, not, not everything has to be optimized when you're in a plane, you know, 30,000 feet. Yeah. Things need to be optimized, but in this drawer right now, some cardboard will do just fine.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Well, I would say that that's optimized, right? You don't have to over-engineer. You could
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817engineer. There you go. Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815you just gotta whatever works, works.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, precisely.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Put some duct tape over that hole in the plane. It's fine.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817It's fine. I've been doing a little bit of gaming as well.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Oh,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817a different kind of game.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815A can phone game.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817It's called Paired. It's an app
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Oh, a phone game.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817it's not a game. It's uh, it's an app that my therapist recommended to me about, like couples and stuff. So, yeah, you like, you pair with your significant other and then you. Like answer questions together and I don't know, I'm looking for a little bit more connection in my life. It's hard, you know, with the kids and I'm sure you've experienced the same thing, but I feel like you and Dan like do more stuff together than me and Austen do. So
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815What do you mean do more stuff?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I don't know.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815whole day out for my birthday. That's when we saw the movie.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817That sounds great.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815we did putt putt, uh,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817fun.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I didn't let Dan eat dinner because I'm a psycho. It was like a food court that food court plays downtown,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh, uh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815and I'm like, I don't want to eat at a food court for my birthday. It's my
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh, but Foundry is so fun. You can get a little bit from here, a little bit from there.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815like my nightmare. I don't wanna stand in line and have to look for a place to sit. Like that's just, no, it's Is
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Fair.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815No.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Was it a week weekend? Because it gets real. It gets real busy.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815It was just not what I expected. I thought it would be a little bit more open, but it was cute. That's where we saw the movie at the fancy, uh, the fancy movie
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, I know which one you're talking about. Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815That was nice. We should have got dinner there, but the popcorn smelled so good, so we just had popcorn for dinner and then drank for like five hours straight, and we went to the speakeasy.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817I bet. Isn't that a beautiful one? I, we went to that too.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815it was a fun little experience. It
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Mm-hmm.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815maybe not what I needed at that moment. We
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Because you had been drinking for five hours.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, it just was, it was down cold and I don't know, I wasn't as decorated as well as I thought it could be, but
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh, I was, I guess I was kind of drunk the last time I was there. I remember liking it. I just remember it was dark and that the drinks were good and strong.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, the drinks were good and strong. My husband and I had to split our second drink and then, yeah, we went
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817That's how you know it's good. You're like, let's split this drink.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815think we got home at 9 35 or
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh, wow. Yeah. You were in there early.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Because our reservation was at like eight 15 or something. So yeah, we flew through everything you can do at that fancy little entertainment district. But it was cute. I had never, I had never been before. So now we say check, done it.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817You, did you go to the Museum of Illusions?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815'cause I didn't wanna spend more money. Yeah.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah. It is kind of expensive to get in, but it's pretty fun. I didn't do it there, but I did a Museum of Illusions in Arizona with the, with Charlotte, and it was kind of fun.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, I bet that's something that's more fun with your kid than your husband.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, but I mean, if, if you're really into taking selfies, I could see how you could really like it.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815looks like the things that the, not the Magic House, the science center used to
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, yeah,
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815just got rid of.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817yeah. But there's like a whole like room after room of them
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817that which you can take pictures of.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Right. What, and you didn't have cell phones back then, so what?
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Exactly.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815do? So, I don't know, maybe I'll take the kids back there someday. I wanted to do the VR stuff too, but my mom got a VR headset for her birthday, and it depends on
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Your mom got a VR set for her birthday.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, I don't remember the thinking behind it, but, um, some of the games are really fun. Like
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817They are.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815it's augmented reality, uh, that's good. But the ones where you're like moving around in a video game, like, I think it was like Batman Begins or something. Nauseous
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Very, they're very disorienting.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815'cause you're shooting forward and your body's staying still. And I get nauseous and I'm like, got the sweats. Um, but I think the VR and like the big. would be different
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815your body's moving with
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815The only thing is like, just wanna shoot stuff, you know, like, like
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Why not? Are you not an American, Rachel?
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815I don't know. I just like, come on, let's have a new idea. Like the squid game ones was the one I was the most intrigued in, but like I didn't wanna get murdered instantly and like, what? You wasted your 80 bucks or whatever.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Well, I'm sure you get like a set amount of time. It doesn't matter how many times you die.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815my luck, it would. I don't have a speedy little dinosaur to run
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817We should do it together. I would totally play squid games with you. I haven't watched the series, but I'm familiar with the concept, so, uh, let's do it.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815version of it,
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Oh geez.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815better, a little bit more fun. And speaking of more fun, it's time for us to go do our real show.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Our real jobs that aren't jobs.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815And that is in itself fun.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Yeah, exactly. We choose to do it.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yes, it's uh, are nice little, these get us warmed up for the big episodes that we record. So we would do these convos anyway, so we thought might as well
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Record'em.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815and put'em out there for you for free. You're welcome. Do
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Well, all right guys. Catch you on the flip side. Catch you on the flippity flop as I think Rachel who said before.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815Yeah, flippity flop, flop flip. us know your drip and what you think about the things that we talked about. You probably have opinions. Let us know. Email us at root@impolitesocietypodcast.com or use the link in the show notes to send us your, to
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Questions, thoughts.
rc-guest222_1_04-11-2025_203815send us your que to send us an anonymous text. We can't text you back. Don't fear. Um, and then the rating, review, all that stuff. Bye.
laura-b_1_04-11-2025_203817Bye.
